About The Chihuahua Dog: The Smallest And The Oldest Breed In America

Being the smallest of all breeds, the Chihuahua also holds the distinction of being the oldest breed in America and is named after the Chihuahua region of Mexico and with a very fine structure to their bones is also quite muscular. As a breed, it is very distinctive, having a unique personality and are often called as “Chi”, being very full of energy and grace as well as always having a human-like expression and have the longest life span of any dog – fifteen years or so.

A Devoted And Loyal Pet

This breed is known for being a very devoted as well as loyal animal and is very closely attached to their owners and loves a lot of attention being given to it. The Chihuahua is bold and fearless and will guard its master to a high degree of protectiveness even though its nature is gentle as well as loving and it has a good temper but is suspicious of strangers and so, makes good watchdogs. In the proximity of their own breed they are very sociable but do not take kindly to other breeds and are also not ideally suited for children

The Chihuahua is well known for its large eyes as well as diminutive size and large, erect ears and there are two varieties of the Chihuahua – that of the long coat as well as one that is smooth coated. A number of long-coat Chihuahuas do not have thick hair which is really very thin though long-coated Chihuahuas would be having dense and thick coats. There are no breed standards that define the Chihuahua’s height though the weight and overall proportions have been defined, resulting in different height dogs, more than for other breeds.

The Chihuahua is cherished for its devotion as well as personality which are alert and intelligent and its size allows it to fit into different environments. The Chihuahua may be thought of as being high-strung but with proper training as well as socialization, it can become a remarkable companion though it may not be ideal for children even though they become very attached to one single person that may even lead to jealousy on its part. The Chihuahua is also clannish and likes only its own breed dogs and is brave creatures that are not afraid to accost larger animals even at the expense of sustaining injuries.

The Chihuahua requires veterinary attention for its teeth as well as when giving birth and may also suffer some genetic anomalies, some of which may be neurological like epilepsy as well as seizure disorders. In addition, it may also suffer from patella luxation which is very painful and also collapsing trachea and hydrocephalus, which means water in the brain.

The Chihuahua likes to pick what it eats and can be quite choosy about its food and it needs good nutritious food but at the same time, care should be taken that it does not become overweight since that may cause it to sustain joint injuries, tracheal collapse as well as a shorter life and also chronic bronchitis.

The Chihuahua is often described as being mini or pocket sized and is referred to as tiny toy or teacup due to their small size though one should be careful with extremely small sized Chihuahuas that may in fact be runts. When one does eventually own a Chihuahua one can expect a loyal and devoted pet that is somewhat noisy and aggressive towards other dogs, especially those of other breeds. All in all, if properly trained and socialized, this breed makes a very good and affectionate pet dog. One may want to learn more about the history and origin of the Chihuahua before purchasing it.
