A Brief Explanation Of Training Collars For Dogs

Having a new dog can be a lot of fun, but training him is often a challenge. Some trainers see a solution in training collars for dogs, although it takes a bit of research in order to know exactly which training collar is the best or most appropriate to your dog's situation and characteristics. There are also numerous variations of each kind of training collar with different manufacturers offering various models with different featuress.

With so many options to choose from, the average dog owner can find himself or herself overwhelmed, but if the specific needs of each dog owner are clearly identified, then the selection becomes much easier.

Types of training collars for dogs

Choosing the right type of collar can be key in the success of the training. While it's true that every collar was made with the intention of training, each one differs in its approach. One of the most common options is the electronic collar. This type of collars deliver a harmless but surprising static shock to the dog when it incurs in bad behavior.

Choke collars are another option. As the name suggests, when the dog struggles against the owners lead the collar constricts. It is important to get proper instruction on how to use this type of collar to prevent injury to your dog. Finally, there are citronella spray collars, which spray the dog's mouth and nose with a citronella scent which is disgusting to dogs whenever they disobey an order or incurs in bad behavior.

Regardless of which training collar you select to use, it's paramount that your dog understands that training is taking place and that the instructions on what the pet is or isn't supposed to be doing are clear. Without clear instructions on what the animal has to do in order to avoid punishment, training will only result in fear or agressiveness. It is good to keep in mind that while the use of training collars for dogs may be uncomfortable for your dog and for you they can be very effective and in time your dog will learn the correct behaviours and will require very few correction signals.

Today, training collars for dogs are one of the most useful tools for dog owners. There are different classes of collars, but the most common are electronic, choking, and spray based. However, training collars for dogs should always be used in training and only under supervision and with clear instructions.
