Breeding your Chihuahua

When you consider breeding your Chihuahua there are many things you need to think about.  You should make sure you are breeding for genuine reasons, ensure you know about the breeding process and how to handle whatever may come up.  Your job in Chihuahua breeding is to become knowledgeable about the ins and outs of breeding Chihuahua's.

Small dogs often have difficulties with breeding.  You have to be prepared for anything that may happen.  You should understand the Chihuahua breed and how your dogs bloodline can effect breeding.  There are so many things that could go wrong that if you are not prepared then your dog may suffer the consequences.

What You Must Know Before Breeding

Before you breed your Chihuahua there are some things you must check out.  Getting the necessary information is the only way to can make sure that breeding your Chihuahua is even a good idea.  Some dogs simply are not fit for breeding and if you do not take the time to check out your dogs history, you could end up with plenty of problems on your hands.

You need to gather all the information about the male and female Chihuahua's that covers their genetics and health history.  You should ensure that neither prospective parent has any genetic defects or health problems.  If you do not know the genetic history of either dog then it is best not to breed them.  You may run into serious problems if you do.

Steps To Take Before Breeding

Some Chihuahua's are not fit for breeding.  They may have a wonderful genetic and health history, but may otherwise be unfit to breed.  Don't stop at just doing research when it comes to preparing for breeding you Chihuahua.  Go all the way and make sure she is ready to breed. 

To begin with your Chihuahua should be at least three years old.  Waiting until she is three will help to make sure she is both mentally and physically ready to care for pups.  The male and female dogs should also be the same size.  Breeding dogs of different sizes can cause complications for the mother. You should also get your pup checked by the vet to make sure she is physically able to carry and deliver pups.  

Get Prepared

You must also prepare yourself for the whole Chihuahua breeding process.  There are things you must know and do to ensure that the process goes as smoothly as possible. Pregnancy will last 63 days and problems can occur every step of the way.  Being prepared is the only way to protect yourself and your dog.

You should have extra money set aside to pay for emergency care and a cesarean, which is a great possibility with Chihuahua's.  You will probably also need to vaccinate the puppies and have them checked by the vet once they are born.  Besides being prepared money wise you should also know the signs of parturition and signals that something is not going well.  You should know what to do if your dog rejects her pups, too.
