Grooming is an essential part of Chihuahua care. It is not only a way to keep your dog looking good, but also helps to keep him healthy. Part of your Chihuahua's grooming care involves clipping his toenails and brushing his teeth, which are both important to his health. Also during Chihuahua grooming care you will brush and bathe him to keep his coat looking pretty. It is very important to your dog to make sure you have a regular Chihuahua grooming care schedule.
Your Chihuahua will have either long or short hair. This factor will determine your exact course of action when grooming his coat. Short haired Chihuahua's do not need as much attention as long haired Chihuahua's. However, any type of Chihuahua needs less grooming than other breeds, like large dogs and long haired dogs. In fact, Chihuahua's are one of the easiest dogs to keep groomed.
Brushing your Chihuahua is important, even if his hair is short. You brush his coat to help keep it smooth and to aid in the natural shedding process. Short haired Chihuahua's need brushing on occasion, which usually means whenever they look as if they need it. Long haired Chihuahua's should be brushed more often, like once a week. You may find that you need to brush your dog more often if they shed quite a bit. You can brush your Chihuahua with a damp cloth or soft bristle brush.
The Chihuahua's lifestyle makes bathing a once a month ritual. Chihuahua's tend to groom themselves and keep themselves clean. They do not spend a lot of time outside, so they are not exposed to dirt and other matter. Chihuahua's rarely get that 'dog' smell to them, too. Giving your Chihuahua a bath too often can actually cause skin problems. When you do bathe your dog use mild shampoo's. Make sure to dry him off completely afterwards so he does not get chilled. You should also avoid bathing a puppy before they have been completely vaccinated.

Perhaps the hardest part of Chihuahua grooming care is clipping their nails. They hate it and often will put up quite a fight. With their tiny stature they can easily slip away and hide, making nail clipping seem impossible. It takes some carefully planning and swift action to get a Chihuahua's nails cut.
You may want to watch a professional groomer cut your dogs nails before attempting it yourself. This will allow you to see how it is done and you can ask questions if you need to. The most important part of nail clipping is to identify the quick. The quick is like the cuticle. You never want to cut past the quick or cut the quick.
Just like you, your Chihuahua needs good dental care. Chihuahua's are prone to dental problems, so make sure you do not forget to include teeth brushing in your Chihuahua grooming care. You can either use a toothbrush with soft bristles to brush away the plaque and debris or you can try wrapping your finger in gauze and rubbing the teeth to remove the debris. Be sure to also remember to massage the gums.
