Expert Grooming Tips For Your Chihuahua

You may feel very prepared to provide Chihuahua grooming care to your pet, but once you actually try giving him a bath or clipping his nails it is a while new story.  Each dog is different and your dog is sure to exhibit his feelings about grooming.  You may find difficulties with several Chihuahua care grooming routines or he may have a certain thing he doesn't like.  For example, almost all Chihuahua's have a dislike for getting their toenails clipped, but your pup may hate it more than most.  In situations like this it helps to have some tips from expert groomers.

Bathing And Brushing

In general your Chihuahua will not likely put up a fuss about a bath or about being brushed.  If you have a short haired Chihuahua you will find bathing and brushing a simple part of your Chihuahua grooming care.  You will only need to bath him about once a month and you can simply rub him down with a wet cloth as needed to smooth his hair.  Long haired Chihuahua's require a bit more maintenance.  They need bathing two three times per month and brushing about once a week to keep them looking good.

You'll find that unlike many breeds, when you give your Chihuahua a bath he will not try to get out.  This is mostly due to the fact he is too little to escape and knows this.  He also will likely shiver once wet, which is why it is important to make sure the water and room are warm.  Also make sure to dry him off really good so he does not catch a chill.  Also do not use a brush with hard bristles as this can irritate the Chihuahua's sensitive skin.

Eye Care

The best way to help keep your Chihuahua's eyes healthy is to practice regular Chihuahua eye care.  You should wipe the dogs eyes with a cotton ball that has been moistened with saline solution.  You can also use a q-tip, but you must be carefully.  If he is moving around and resisting the cleaning you could end up hurting his eye.  Chihuahua's of light colors often develop a tear stain around their eyes and this can be removed with the saline solution wipe.  You should wipe his eyes one or two times per week.

Nail Care

As mentioned, most Chihuahua's are very resistant to getting their nails trimmed.  They simply just do not like it.  You will probably find this the most tedious and difficult Chihuahua grooming care task.  One of the best things to do before ever attempting to cut his nails yourself is to have a groomer do it and watch while it is being done.  You should learn the proper method so that you do not end up hurting your dog.  They will squirm and try to escape, so you must know how to properly hold him.  The quick can sometimes be difficult to see, so it helps to have a professional point it out to you.

Teeth Care

A god trick for cleaning Chihuahua's teeth is to use a little gauze wrapped around your finger.  You then can rub their teeth clean ad massage their gums at the same time.  You may find that this, like nail clipping, is not your dog's favorite part of grooming.  Just be gentle and patient.
