What You Need To Groom Your Chihuahua

Chihuahua grooming care is essential to a healthy and happy dog. You should have a grooming schedule which includes bathing, brushing, nail clipping and teeth brushing.  In order to do correct Chihuahua grooming care you need the correct supplies, tools and equipment.  Having everything you need will make the job much easier for both you and your Chihuahua.

Grooming Supplies

For proper Chihuahua grooming care you will need the proper supplies.  It is important to seek out supplies that are specifically made for Chihuahua's.  Some supplies, however, can be non-specific, like cotton swabs.  By buying products that are designed for a Chihuahua you are ensuring that you are using the proper ingredients on your dog and not exposing him to something that may cause a reaction.

Grooming supplies include shampoo, cotton swabs, toothbrush and eye wipes.  For Chihuahua grooming care you will need a mild shampoo that includes a moisturizer or a mild shampoo and a conditioner.  This is important because harsh shampoos and a lack of moisturizer can cause your dogs skin to dry out.  You will also need a soft bristle brush or a hand cloth for brushing your dog.  To clean their ears you need cotton swabs and ear oil.  For dental care you need a toothbrush or gauze and toothpaste.  You should also have extra cloth for cleaning their eyes.

You will find there is an overwhelming choice of dog shampoos.  There are shampoos for certain coat colors, flea shampoos, shampoo for dry skin and many more options.  You should be able to go with a Chihuahua specific shampoo and if you are in need of something special then ask your vet for advice on which product to choose.

In addition to supplies you will need some special tools to help groom your Chihuahua.  Tools are needed mainly for coat and nail care.  The main tools you will need are nail clippers, scissors, brushes and grooming gloves.  Tools are necessary to get the job done right.  Many tools are not breed specific, but you may find clippers or brushes made specifically for a Chihuahua. 

Grooming Equipment

While not essential, like supplies or tools, grooming equipment can be a nice addition to your Chihuahua grooming care.  Grooming equipment helps to make grooming easier and more comfortable for both you and your dog.  For a Chihuahua a hair dryer is a great piece of equipment.  After a bath a wet Chihuahua can turn into a shivering Chihuahua, which makes him very uncomfortable.  It only takes a few minutes to blow him dry with a hair dryer.
