Part of good Chihuahua care is finding a good veterinarian. Choosing a good vet is just as important as choosing a family doctor to care for your family. Your dog requires the same attention to detail and skilled knowledge that a human does. Just like humans, not all dogs are alike. Chihuahua's have special needs of which some vets may not be aware. You should choose a vet as you would choose a specialist for yourself.
The vet you choose to care for your Chihuahua should be experienced and knowledgeable about the breed. He or she should have knowledge about special Chihuahua needs and health concerns. One special concern about Chihuahua's is that they are very vulnerable to anesthetic and can be over anesthetized during surgery. This is one example of why you should make sure that the vet you choose knows what he is doing when it comes to Chihuahua's.
You should ask the vet questions about his experience. Find out how he gained his knowledge about Chihuahua's. Ask him if he has worked with Chihuahua's before and, if so, how long and how many Chihuahua's he has seen. Check his educational background, too. Make sure he has specific training for Chihuahua care. Ask for references and talk to those references. Be as thorough as possible.
You should feel at ease and comfortable with your vet. It is really important to feel like you can go to your vet with any question or concern. You need to be comfortable enough to contact him in an emergency and know he will be able to help. You should feel as if you can ask questions and get a good response that explains everything you need to know. You and your dogs vet have to work together to maintain a good level of care for your Chihuahua so it makes perfect sense that you should have a good relationship.
You should consider a few different veterinarians before making your final decision. To find vets in your area you can try a few different methods. You can go straight to the yellow pages and start calling the numbers there, but keep in mind that you may not know if the vet has experience with Chihuahua's unless it is specified in the ad. If you know people who own Chihuahua's ask them about who they use. Contact the breeder or shelter where you got your Chihuahua and ask for referral's to vets in your area. These two methods will yield better results because you will be sure the vet has experience with Chihuahua care.
Finding a veterinarian to care for your Chihuahua is something that should be done carefully. Small dogs, like the Chihuahua, need care from someone who is knowledgeable about small breeds to avoid possible problems. Just as you would not go to a Dermatologist for an earache, you would not take your Chihuahua to a vet that has experience only with large breeds. Choosing a good vet also comes in handy when you have an emergency because the vet will know what is wrong, not waste time trying to figure it out.
