| How to avoid making the same Mistakes other Chi owners are making.... (more) |
Chihuahua rescue dogs come from a variety of places. They are dogs that would have otherwise ended up at the pound, but have been taken in by the rescue. The rescue sometimes brings the dog back to good health, too. Abused dogs are cared for and brought back to a healthy state of mind and physical health. Many Chihuahua rescue dogs have come from unfavorable conditions, so it is essential that you understand exactly what to expect form your Chihuahua rescue adoption.
A rescue Chihuahua has already been through quite bit, emotionally speaking. He has went form a bad home to the shelter and now you are taking him home. He may have just gotten adjusted or not even had the chance to adjust to life at the rescue and now you are bringing him to another new home. Each new place means new rules and if your dog was abused in the past he will expect abuse with each new home until he learns otherwise.
Your new Chihuahua will have to go through a period of adjustment to get used to you and your family. He may have potty accidents, exhibit behavior problems or withdraw. You should understand that this is part of the adjustment process and your job is to make it as easy as possible. Avoid scolding him and try instead to show him stability and love.

It can take three or more weeks for your new Chihuahua to adjust to your home. Be patient and do everything possible to make this time easier. You should teach him the rules in a slow, but repetitive manner. Reward him when he is good. This will convey a sense of trust between you and the dog. In the past he may have been scolded and never given treats. Try to keep his past in mind.
Many rescue dogs come to the shelter with health problems. Most of the time these medical issues are handled before the dog is ever adopted out. You will most likely get a completely healthy dog. If your dog does have health issues that need continuing care the rescue will let you know and make sure you are educated about the issues before you ever adopt the pup.
In general, Chihuahua's from a rescue are as healthy and happy as any other Chihuahua. They simply were abandoned for some reason. Most of the time the rescue will handle the problem the dog has before you adopt him. Adjustment is something that every dog goes through, but it is important to remember that with a Chihuahua from a rescue that their past may have left them timid and afraid of new situations.
