Chihuahua's are the smallest breed of dog. The originated in Mexico and are named for the state in Mexico form which they came, Chihuahua, Mexico. They are very small, with a strong looking body. They often try to act as if they are much larger than their average 2 pound weight and 8 inch height. They have large eyes that display a range of emotions and large ears which perch atop their small head. They move about quickly and love to bark at anything. The main difference between Chihuahua's is the color and type of their fur and the body type.

Fur Distinctions

Chihuahua's are either long haired or short haired. The short haired Chihuahua has a smooth coat that experiences minimal shedding. They have an erect tail and ears with tips that may droop. The long Haired Chihuahua's coat is soft and can be flat or curly. The ears are fringed with fur and the tail is long and furry. The long haired Chihuahua sheds more than the short haired and requires more grooming.

Chihuahua's have a wide range of colors. They can be solid or spotted. Common coloring includes, fawn, chocolate, silver, blue, white and black. Chihuahua's can be a mixture of colors, as well. The colors can be in a range of shades from deep to light.

Body Types

Chihuahua's are either Apple heads or Deer heads. Apple head Chihuahua's have a short nose and their head is shaped similar to that of an apple. Deer head Chihuahua's have a longer nose than Apple Head's and they often resemble a Doberman Pinscher. Deer head is the term used to describe any Chihuahua that does not have the characteristic apple shaped head.

Misconceptions About Type Of Chihuahuas

Many breeders try to sell Chihuahua's under the label of 'teacup', 'mini' or 'pocket'. These are merely sales gimmicks. The only types of Chihuahua's are Apple Head or Deer Head. All Chihuahua's are of the toy breed. This sales gimmick has led to some issues with breeding that have caused breeder's to try to get the smallest sized Chihuahua possible since people believe them to be rare and will pay more for them.

The types of Chihuahua's can have a range of the above characteristics. They may be a fawn colored short hair Apple Head or a chocolate colored long haired Deer Head. Whatever the combination, the feisty pup is a great companion and a wonderful dog to have as a pet.
