Miniature Schnauzer, Miniature Dachshund, Boston Terrier, Westie, or a Chihuahua?

Any pros and cons? Any experiences? We will feed the dog a higher quality food.

Schnauzers are barkers. Lots of grooming necessary. Up to you whether or not to dock ears; I like them natural.
Dachshunds are pre-disposed to back problems and are harder to housebreak (hard headed little Germans) Smoothies don't shed much. Long hairs barkmore and the wires are more terrier-like and the coat requires professional grooming as well. You need to learn and teach others the proper way to lift and carry them, teach them not to jump on and off furniture, and DO NOT allow them to get overweight. This is one breed that will literally eat itself to death. 1/4 cup of Canidae twice a day is sufficient for an adult in the 11-15 pound range. Pups will need that amount in 3 feedings.
Bostons are smart, bossy, and independent. Prone to allergies (coat and skin problems, but a quality food should help there) also prone to breathing problems (due to shoved in face.) But they do not shed and are very loving and loyal. They love to play ball and tug.
Westies are charming little clowns, rarely crabby, but do require regular grooming. The ones I know are all ball players. a racquetball is their favorite toy with a ropetug coming in close second.
Chihuahuas vary; lately they have been overbred and have more health problems and are yappier and more nervous IMO. I'd be VERY sure about the breeder if I were getting one.

Below are links to dog breed selectors. You answer some questions about your lifestyle, what size dog you want, and if you want it to shed and it tells you what breed of dog will do the best with you. Try them all because they may give slightly different breeds and ask slightly different questions.

You could get a mixed breed dog. They are generally healthier than pure bred dogs, and they cost a lot less. Go to your shelter and look around for the perfect dog. Sometimes, it is best to get an adult dog, they take less work and are usually already housebroken. Check out http://www.petfinder.com you type in your zip code, the breed of dog you want, and the age preference and it gives you tons of choices.

I'm in love with my chihuahua, he's a medium size, he's smart, intelligent, knows tricks, loves the outdoors and indoors, he's awesome with kids and people! I don't know if u're just looking for a pet or a show dog but chihuahuas are not high maintenance and they are so fun and lovavle to have. Good luck anyway, just remember to give your dog lots of love and attention :)

I would definitely say miniature schnauzers. They do shed at all what so ever. They can eat anything as far as I know. The higher quality food should be fine. They are very cute and loveable and for all ages, but if they ever get out or lost they have absolutely no sense of direction.

Amazing! Another opportunity to brag on my new, little boy-wonder! I had been looking for an apple-head Chihuahua since January but a few days ago, I walked into a pet store and saw the cutest thing ever. An AFFENPINSCHER! They are small but fearless! Not shaky like most small dogs and they look like Ewoks from Star Wars fullgrown. The second he was let out of his kennel, he ran right up to me and started licking all over and he's only 2 lbs! Ran right up to my 90 lb. Boxer too! He's intelligent and doesn't bark unless I forget him on the bed cause he can't get down….he's just amazing and I'm soo glad I got him.

Good Luck!!

I have owned and bred Miniature Longhaired Dachshunds for 25 years, and I think they are a delightful breed. However, one thing to consider - where do you live? We recently moved from the UK to Canada with 2 dogs, and I have found that they really are not suited to the climate here. Once it snows, they cannot go out for walks, as the snow collects in their "armpits" and between their toes. Being very low to ground, they also get very muddy when it's wet and the longhaired ones collect all sorts of debris (leaves, twigs, etc) in their coat if they're walked in the forest. Having said that, the coat is not hard to look after, and mud etc will just brush out once dry. Dachshunds also come in two other coats - smooth and wirehaired. Smooth coats are very easy to look after, wires less so as their coat requires stripping. Be aware that the different coats are separate breeds with very different personalities.

Schnauzers and Westies require professional attention to the coat, as it will need stripping. You can learn to do it, but it's not easy.

Have you thought about a Norfolk or Norwich Terrier? They are the cutest of the terriers, and are almost identical, the only difference being that Norfolks have drop ears and Norwiches have erect ears.

Chihuahua? Is that a dog? (Just joking)

Whatever you get, hope you enjoy it!

PS Please, please, please do not buy your dog from a pet store. Responsible caring breeders do not sell their puppies to pet stores, they mostly come from puppy mills and are not well bred or well raised. Get your puppy direct from a breeder. Good breeders will be pleased to talk with you about your choice, to answer all your questions and to let you see the puppies with the mother. Look for puppies that are raised "underfoot", ie in the thick of the family home where they will have become accustomed to all the usual household sights and sounds. Thay way, you will end up with a happy, healthy, confident puppy.

I know alot of people are recomending many types of dogs. I want to recomend two. I have a Mini Schnauzer and a mini Poodle. I love both and they are great dogs but they have there pros and cons

Schnauzers are such amazing dogs. They are one of the most amazing dogs I have ever met. My dog had uncropped ears. This prooves to make him adorable but very costly. His ears are so expressive and are so cute! Sadly uncropped ears are prone to ear inffections. My dog barks alot! Without propper training it may be a big barker. Schnauzers are prone to allergies, mine has bad skin allergies. The allergies can easily be avoided if fed the propper food. Schnauzer are very protective. You must train them to be nice to visiters or they may be mean. I know mine would risk his life for me, but it makes some of my friends scarred. Shnuazers are such great dogs, they are scarred and skitish like other small breed dogs. They like to play but can also be gorgeuos. Above all I want you to get a schnauzer beacuse I know you will be happy with them. They are worth it.

Poodles are such smart dogs. One of the most easiest to potty train. They are very easy to train tricks to. They are very preatty. The one negative is there coat witch needs grooming. They are sweet and cuddle bugs. They are playful and dainty. They arnt pigs and they are NOT skitish. Not prone to allergies and rarely get dieases.

What ever you get i hope you think about the Minature Poodle and Schnauzer

p.s My friend has a Westie, They are so cute and huge fluff balls. He is very sweet.
