Long Haired Chihuahua: Learn Why He Is Such A Popular Dog Breed

Though not much is known about the exact origins of the Chihuahua it is nevertheless believed that he originated from Egypt or from the ancient Aztec civilization. The fact remains that there are no smaller dog breeds than the Chihuahua and so he is classified among the Toy breed categories. Despite the small size of the Chihuahua it is not recommended treating him as a toy dog and so you need to ensure that when he is in the presence of children that there is someone responsible on hand to take care of things. Not only do you need to protect your children but because the Chihuahua is so small and fragile in build you need to also be sure that he does not get hurt through mishandling him.

 

Loved For His Adorable Nature

 

The long haired Chihuahua is small in size which of course is obvious. At the same time he is a very popular dog breed that is loved for his adorable nature and because he is also very cute and attractive he is first choice among many celebrities who always seem to need something to help them look even more glamorous.

 

The long haired Chihuahua looks a lot like a Pomeranian and typically the hair on the Chihuahua is generally referred to as long coat or even smooth coat. These dogs also possess heads that are shaped like an apple and his eyes are big while the ears are generally tasseled and the overall appearance is very exquisite. The long haired Chihuahua is known to be the tiniest sized dog in the world and typically they do not grow to more than nine inches in height while some might not grow to beyond six inches in height.

 

Long haired Chihuahuas and more particularly the show dogs are lighter in weight and will weigh in at least six pounds less than a typical long haired Chihuahua. The average weight of these dogs is in the region of ten pounds or slightly more. You need to also determine what temperament the long haired Chihuahua possesses and what you can expect from his behavior. Typically, there is no real point of difference between the long haired Chihuahua and his short haired brethren.

 

The long haired Chihuahua is however amiable and lovable and very affectionate and his personality radiates jovialness and he is also usually very alert. These pets are well suited for the elderly as well as disabled persons because they are very friendly and so make good companions and they are also well socialized which makes them fun to be around. The only real negative thing that can be said about the long haired Chihuahua is that they tend to be very stubborn and they are a breed that does not train all that well either. The good news is that after they have been trained they will turn out to be wonderful pet dogs.

 

Even though the long haired Chihuahua is categorized as a Toy breed there are many animal experts that warn against bringing him into a home that has many small children and recommend instead that they only be allowed to play in the company of adults to whom they offer excellent companionship.

 

It is also necessary to keep in mind that the long haired Chihuahua has a very small frame and the bone structure too is fragile which means that you need to handle them with great care because a single small false move can easily end up causing an injury to this wonderful dog breed. Still, the long haired Chihuahua does befriend others very quickly not only with you but with other breeds as too with animals in general and so they can be found playing with cats and other dog breeds.

 

One notable feature of the long haired Chihuahua that is also applicable to the short haired version is that they are very sensitive to cold weather. It is therefore recommended giving them clothes to keep them warm and of course during the winter you need to make sure that they are clothed in very warm sweaters.

 

The long haired Chihuahua is exquisite to look at but he demands a lot of care and must be groomed often and regularly so as to remove knots in the hair as too to prevent the hair from matting up. In addition, you need to keep your long haired Chihuahua free from ticks and so it pays to use residue-free shampoos to bathe him which exercise is necessary once in a month.

 

The long haired Chihuahua is a product of genes that are termed as regressive which means that both parents must have had the same regressive genes to give birth to a long haired Chihuahua.
